Tips for Decorating Your Christmas Tree

Decorate your Christmas Tree

It’s that time of year again.  That’s right, its Christmas time. It’s time to get out and enjoy some Christmas shopping, enjoy good times with family and friends and, of course, it’s finally time to decorate your Christmas tree. There may be no other symbol quite as synonymous with Christmas as the tree. There is just something so magical about a well decorated Christmas tree to help bring in the holiday cheer.

A quick walk around the neighbourhood will allow you to see some great Christmas tree decorating ideas or it will simply allow you to enjoy some holiday cheer. One neighbourhood you will not want to miss is the Vancouver area. There are many UBC homes that have beautifully decorated Christmas trees and outdoor holiday light displays as well. Here are some tips to help you and your family decorate the perfect tree this holiday season!

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Before you even begin to think about decorating your tree, you are going to need to decide what type of tree do you want. Do you want an artificial tree to decorate or a live tree?

If you choose an artificial tree, you can begin decorating it whenever you want and you will not have to worry about any upkeep. If, however, you choose the more traditional live tree, you will need to water the tree daily and you cannot leave it up as long since it will eventually dry out and can quickly become a fire hazard.

Decorating Tips

Once you have decided upon your Christmas tree, it is time to start decorating.  The first step is to hang the lights. You will want to start at the base and work your way up. Make sure to hang a strand of lights on all major branches to get the full illuminating effect. You may want to think about plugging the lights into a timer so you will not need to worry about plugging and unplugging the tree daily.

The next step is to add the garland to your tree. To properly add garland, start at the top of the tree and slowly work your way to the base. We recommend using two strands of garland for every vertical foot of your Christmas tree.

Next, it is time to hang your Christmas ornaments. There are really no hard or fast rules when it comes to hanging your ornaments. You will probably want to hang your favourites near the front of the tree where you can see them. We recommend starting with your larger ornaments and trying to space them evenly around the tree. Then do the same with your medium-sized ornaments and finally with your smallest ornaments.

Once you have finished hanging your ornaments, garland and lights, it is time to light the tree and step back and enjoy your Christmas tree. Have a Happy Holiday and a Merry Christmas!
