UBC offers a full range of housing options in five distinct neighbourhoods to provide a unique opportunity to live, work and learn in a truly integrated campus community.

As promised in last week’s UBC real estate blog regarding area events in October I am following up with information for my area residents (and soon to be residents) about Halloween. The Point Grey region is all about community and seasonal affairs such as the one that lands this coming 31st are a big deal, being celebrated before the day even arrives. I will be attending as many of them as possible, to mingle with some of the households I have helped place within the community in addition to having some bone chilling fun myself as I seek out both humorous and haunted takes on Halloween.

Halloween Events near UBC and Point Grey

1. Growloween Trick or Treating @ Point Grey Village (Oct 26, 12 PM - 2 PM)

On the Saturday before the 31st (to accommodate the young ones who can’t be out late on a week night) over 35 merchants will be doling out Halloween candy along West 10th avenue between Discovery Street and Tolmie.  However the neighborhood knows that for many households doggies are a part of the family too and thus the aptly named affair “Growloween” also includes treats for costumed pet pups which starts with a visit to Three Dog Bakery at 4548 West 10th avenue. A street packed full of kids and dogs decked out in zombie costumes will be cute and creepy at the same time and serves as a definite “must see” this Halloween.

2. Halloween Carnival @ West Point Grey Community Center (Oct 26, 10 AM – 12 PM)

This midday affair is perfect for early risers looking to celebrate Halloween with the little ones a little early. Dress your tots up as their favorite character and head on over to the West Point Grey Community Center for Halloween crafts, games, a haunted house, and a bewitching bouncy castle.

3. Murder Mystery @ Aberthau Mansion (Oct 27, 5 PM – 8 PM)

West Point Grey Community Center’s Aberthau Mansion offers the perfect setting for a unsettlingly fun Murder Mystery. Ages 16+ will be in attendance for early tea at 5PM when a gunshot will ring out, indicating that a "murder" has indeed taken place. At that moment you and fellow guests become immersed in solving the crime – perhaps becoming victims yourselves? For more information please visit www.westpointgrey.org.

4. Halloween Spectacular - UBC Symphony Orchestra @ Chan Shun Concert Hall (Oct 31, 8 PM)

Looking for something a little classier this Halloween? The UBC School of Music and Symphony Orchestra is putting on a classical affair this Halloween, presenting the likes of Schubert and Mussorgsky. However, don’t worry about any pretension creeping in and ruining the fun, attendees are encouraged to come in full Halloween garb. Zombie in a tuxedo anyone? For more information please visit the Chan Centre website.

5. Old Fashioned Neighborhood Trick or Treating

The best way to celebrate Halloween in the UBC Point Grey area is to do so the old fashioned way. Get the kids, and yourselves, costumed up in creepy or creative attire and roam our quaint neighborhoods where decorated homes line the lamp lit streets, offering chocolaty and candied treats to stave of mischievous tricksters. The days of shopping mall afternoon trick or treating may be taking over many metropolises but the UBC area has kept the true community spirit alive on Halloween, bringing neighbors together with door to door greetings. Be sure to join them this Halloween and get to know everyone living within the same relative postal code.

I hope you and your family/friends get out there in the UBC Point Grey area and have some safe fun this Halloween. As usual, if you happened to find this article while in the market for a residence in the UBC region please do contact my UBC real estate office anytime. I promise to find you a home free of ghosts – unless that’s what you’re looking for.

As the Thanksgiving long weekend arrives I thought it a good time to stay true to my word in keeping you all up to date with fun events taking place in and around the UBC area at the onset of autumn. While the most important one this month involves sitting around the dining room table (moving to the sofa afterwards) with loved ones over a hearty helping of tryptophan there is still plenty to do starting today and for the remainder of the month.

October Events In & Around UBC:

2013 UBC United Way Great Pancake Race @ MacInnes Field, UBC (Oct 10, 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM)

One of the most popular events of recent years at the UBC campus is the Great Pancake Race, entering its 5th year. Born from good will, the event is put on by the United Way in support of children and seniors within our community. As fa as the details go, the Great Pancake Race is what it sounds to be - you will get messy, but you will have FUN! For more information please visit the website.

UBC Apple Festival @ UBC Botanical Garden (Oct 19-20, 11AM - 4PM)

Make no assumptions about an event titled Apple Festival. While it indeed is everything you may expect from the moniker, it is also so much more and is actually a great way to get out there and enjoy the autumn harvest season. In addition to the farmers market setting that allows you to stock up on BC's most cherished fruit, there are activities abound for children, including face painting, story telling, and puppet shows. Adults also get a kick by becoming impromptu apple connoisseurs with the apple tasting portion of the event. The botanical garden is also home to a tree top canopy walkway which makes for some magnificent photographic opportunities. Last but certainly not least, the hot apple cider and warm apple pie served at the affair makes it more than worth the $4 (kids free) admission. For more information visit the Apple Festival Website.

Thunderbirds Hockey @ UBC Thunderbirds Arena (October ongoing)

What better way to immerse yourself in the community in the fall than by getting out there and supporting the local hockey team? You may be very well be watching future stars of the NHL/WNHL. With both the men's and women's UBC Thunderbirds Hockey teams slated to play locally this month you will have plenty of opportunity to get out there and cheer along with your neighborhood. View the schedule here.

Great Trek Race @ Great Trek Cairn, UBC Campus (Oct 26, 10AM)

This 10 KM run is both for hardcore runners and those who are simply looking to get some exercise along with the community, all the while celebrating the 1922 student march that led to the building of the UBC campus in Point Grey. You can participate in two ways depending on your constitution for events such as this. You can either run the 10 KM as an individual or as part of a four person team, each running a 2.5km relay portion. After the fitness affair there will be an awards ceremony along with food (put those calories lost back on!) and celebrations.

You're probably wondering why I concluded this blog without mention of Halloween, right? Fear not fans of the eve of October 31st. Next week I will detail the recommended Halloween events in the UBC / Point Grey area here in my UBC realtor blog. If you have happened upon this page while seeking homes in the UBC area, please do feel free to contact my UBC real estate office anytime.
